Using modern, no-code technologies, anyone can build useful and engaging geo apps. Learn how to fuse location data, web GIS capabilities, and narrative into immersive app experiences for desktop, web, and mobile users. Explore four popular ArcGIS apps and build skills to design and share apps that feature dynamic GIS capabilities and content. Each week of the course will focus on a different app.

Goals

Transform web maps into attractive apps that anyone can use to explore and analyze data, access content galleries, and interact with map features and information.
Build interactive, map-driven stories to share data and communicate impactfully with your audience.
Configure interactive dashboards that combine maps and dynamic data visualizations to empower leaders, stakeholders, or the public with at-a-glance insights.
Create immersive web apps for mobile, tablet, and desktop users that include any combination of maps, web pages, widgets, and 2D and 3D data.

Suggested Skills

Familiarity with basic GIS concepts and ArcGIS software will be helpful but is not required.

To complete exercises, you need the following:

Esri provides free access to ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Instant Apps, ArcGIS Dashboards, ArcGIS StoryMaps, and ArcGIS Experience Builder during the course.

A broadband Internet connection and a web browser that allows access to embedded video files are required—we recommend using the latest version of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Microsoft Edge. For the best experience, attend the course using a desktop computer, laptop, or tablet.

GIS Foundations (Three-Day Workshop) (May 11, 2026)

GIS Foundations Training Course

GIS Foundations is a thorough overview of the most widely used tools and skills for the GIS Professional. The topics are broken up into sections over 3 days and students can attend any or all of the days as needed. All coursework will be utilizing ArcGIS Pro.

General Agenda: (see more details at bottom)

Day 1 (Monday) Topic: GIS Foundations I: Basics of ArcPro - This course is designed to introduce the fundamental concepts of geographic information systems, demonstrate their use and value, and provide practical skills which can be directly applied to the work environment. Prerequisite: Students are strongly encouraged to have basic computer operations knowledge, file management etc.
Day 2 (Tuesday) Topic: GIS Foundations II: Foundations of GIS - This course is designed to provide an overview of the basic building components for an effective and useful GIS. The course focuses on best practices for building a functioning GIS topics cover databases and tables, querying and selection processes, basic analysis tools, and the basics of editing. Prerequisite: Students are strongly encouraged to have basic GIS skills, or the GIS Foundations I course.
Day 3 (Wednesday) Topic: GIS Foundations III: Spatial Analysis & Modeling - This course is designed to introduce more detailed analysis options and tools. Prerequisite: Students are strongly encouraged to have experience using GIS, or have taken the GIS Foundations I and II courses.

MEALS AND BEVERAGES: Meals and beverages are not provided for this event. There will be designated times for lunch, but attendees must furnish their own meals and beverages for the day. Beverage use is restricted while in the computer labs.

CANCELLATION POLICY: WVAGP policy requires a minimum of 8 registrations to confirm a course. If the threshold is not met by EOB on Friday, May 1st, 2026, the course will be cancelled and all fees refunded. If a student is unable to attend, cancellation prior to May 1st, 2026 will be provided a full refund. You must contact WVAGP directly for the cancellation.

About Web GIS with ArcGIS Online

This two-day course is designed to get you started with web GIS using the ESRI ArcGIS Online platform. You will learn to connect to data, publish data from ArcGIS Pro to ArcGIS Online, symbolize data, configure pop-ups, and make web and mobile apps using a variety of methods. After completing this short course, you will be able to generate web maps and apps for a specific purpose.

First Day: Web Data and Configurable Apps

· Connect to map service

· Publish from ArcGIS Pro

· Create hosted feature layers

Second Day: Web and Mobile Apps
