WVAGP TECHNICAL ISSUES committee

About the WVAGP Technical Issues Committee

What is it? The Technical Issues Committee is responsible for researching and reporting on technical issues that may affect our members. They advise the Board of Directors on those topics and provide assistance to members in acquiring resources and training on how to respond to those issues.

Who is it? Any active WVAGP member is welcome to participate. Members with ideas on topics, methods, and location options are highly encouraged to join!

When is it? The Technical Issues Committee typically meets the week of the regular WVAGP Board of Directors meeting, which usually falls on the third week of the month. Contact the Chair for meeting dates and times.

Current Technical Discussions

  • ArcMap Entering Mature Support - March 2024:
    ESRI's ArcMap will be entering Mature Support in March 2024. This means there will continue to be technical support available, but there will no longer be software updates, patches, or hotfixes. For more information on what this entails, please see their website here.

  • New projection - NAD 2022:
    To improve the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), NGS will replace all three North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) frames and all vertical datums, including the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), with four new terrestrial reference frames and a geopotential datum.
  • NextGen 911:
    Next Generation 911 (commonly referred to as NG911) is a digital, internet protocol (IP)-based system that will replace the analog 911 infrastructure that’s been in place for decades.

  • Census 2030:
    Planning for the 2030 Census is underway. 

  • Building Implementation Plans
    Proper GIS planning is the most important investment any organization can make in building a GIS. Understanding your GIS needs, selecting the right technology at the right time, and establishing documented implementation milestones to measure your progress can ensure your success. 

  • GIS Best Practices:
    General discussion of "best practices" in GIS.
